Remains of Blackbeard's House America's most famous pirate, Edward Teach, otherwise known as Blackbeard, came to Bath, NC to take his thirteenth wife. He built a house across the creek from the village in 1712. Six years later, Blackbeard's days of plunder were brought to an end in a shipboard battle with Lt. Robert Maynard, commander of a force sent by the governor of Virginia to capture him. Maynard is said to have sailed up the Pamlico River to Bath with Blackbeard's severed head displayed on the prow of his ship. The remains of Blackbeard's house, which can be reached only by water, are on a point across the junction of Bath and Back Creek at the end of Bath's Main Street. Many believe Blackbeard buried gold in the area, but none has been found.
